Queens Borough President’s Parent Board

A message from Monica Gutierrez, Education Director, Queens Borough President Melinda Katz:

The Queens Borough President Melinda Katz invites you to her next meeting of the Parent Advisory Board that will be held on Thursday, February 9, 2017 at 6:00pm in Queens Borough Hall located at 120-55 Queens Boulevard, Kew Gardens, NY – Room 200. All parents and educators are invited to attend this informative meeting. We will host a presentation by the School Construction Authority (SCA) on the proposed 2015-2019 Five-year Capital Plan. In addition, the Department of Education (DOE) Division of Family and Community Engagement will explain how parents can become involved with the Community Education Councils (CECs).

School Construction Authority

Two guest speakers from the School Construction Authority will present the SCA 2015-2019 Five-year Capital Plan. Ben Goodman is the Manager of Community Relations and handles Queens’ community boards within School Districts 27, 28, and 29. Michael Mirisola is the Director of External Affairs and handles Queens’ community boards within School Districts 24, 25, 26, and 30. The SCA presentation will detail plans to create new school facilities and to improve infrastructure of existing buildings. In addition, the planned distribution of funding to meet local and City requirements will be expanded upon. This plan will invest in the future of New York City’s public schools, as we continue to work to address issues of overcrowding and to prepare for enrollment growth.

Principals, Parent Coordinators, PTA/PA Parents, and Educators will be able to ask questions and express their construction needs for their school as well as find out why some projects submitted were funded and why others were not.

School District Community Education Council (CEC)

Ayesha George is the Parent Leadership Liaison in the Division of Family and Community Engagement at the DOE. Ms. George will explain the process of applying for a position on a School District Community Education Council (CEC) and demonstrate the role of CECs in passing education resolutions and providing funding to public schools. Each CEC oversees a community school district that includes public elementary, intermediate, and junior high schools.
